Update 3:15 p.m. Wednesday

Romaro Matthews was arrested Wednesday morning and booked into Parish Prison on one count of third-degree rape.?

Original story

Authorities are searching for a Baton Rouge man accused of raping an intoxicated woman after she was seen lying unconscious outside a Tigerland bar one night in September, according to an arrest warrant filed by the Baton Rouge Police Department.

Romaro Matthews, 37, is wanted on one felony count of third-degree rape. The definition of third-degree rape in Louisiana law includes sexual intercourse without consent "when the victim is incapable of resisting or of understanding the nature of the act by reason of a stupor or abnormal condition of mind produced by an intoxicating agent."

The 21-year-old victim told police? she met up with a friend at JL's Place in Tigerland around 11:30 p.m. on the night the incident took place. She said she remembers consuming several drinks before blacking out.

She recalled waking up the next morning in an unfamiliar apartment next to a man she didn't know whose genitals were near her face, according to the warrant.

When she asked the man what happened the night before, Matthews allegedly told her she was standing on the side of the road and asked him for a ride. But officers received a photo of the victim laying on the ground outside the bar — apparently unconscious?— before the incident took place.?

The police report does not say how the photograph of the victim came to be taken and how it wound up in the hands of investigators.?

According to a previous police report, Matthews had told officers during a traffic stop that he helps pick up trash in the parking lot of Fred's Bar and Grill, also in Tigerland, and sometimes gives drunk people rides home.?

A rape examination indicated? the victim had sustained injuries consistent with trauma "caused by forced penetration" and sperm was found on her body, the warrant says. She told police she had not engaged in any type of consensual sexual activity for an extended period of time.?

The victim identified Matthews from a photographic lineup, according to the warrant issued for his arrest.
